Starting a new school
An institution may be registered as an individual non-government school if it meets the requirements of the Education Act 1990. Individual non-government schools are those which operate independently of, or do not form part of, a system of non-government schools approved under the Education Act 1990.
In NSW, a proposed new non-government school must be registered before it opens.
The proprietor of any proposed new individual non-government school must apply to the Board of Studies for initial registration no later than 31 March in the calendar year before the year that the proposed school intends to open.
If a proposed new school wishes to present students for the award of the School Certificate and/or the Higher School Certificate, it must also apply to the Board of Studies for initial accreditation by 31 March in the calendar year before the year that the proposed school intends to deliver courses for the School Certificate and/or Higher School Certificate.
