Curriculum

The curriculum, including curriculum outcomes, provided by a registered non-government school must comply with the requirements set out in Part 3 of the Education Act 1990 relating to:

(i) in the case of a school providing primary education - the minimum curriculum for a school providing primary education, or

(ii) in the case of a school providing secondary education for children during Year 7 to Year 10 - the minimum curriculum for a school providing any such secondary education, or

(iii) in the case of a school providing secondary education for children during Year 11 and Year 12 - the curriculum for students who are candidates for the Higher School Certificate.

A secondary school that enters candidates for the School Certificate and/or the Higher School Certificate must meet the requirements for accreditation.

The Certificate of Registration for a non-government school certifies that the school may provide education for any one or more of the following:

  • primary education for specified Years
  • secondary education for specified Years
  • education of a kind, or for children of a kind, prescribed by the Regulations.

The curriculum delivered by a registered non-government school must meet the requirements associated with its class of registration as specified on the Certificate of Registration.

The Board of Studies may approve modifications to part of a Board of Studies syllabus for use in registered schools under particular circumstances. A registered individual non-government school must apply directly to the Board of Studies for approval to modify part of a Board syllabus.

A registered school that delivers to its students all or part of their courses of study by distance education must meet the curriculum requirements of the Education Act 1990. If a registered individual non-government school intends to deliver all or a significant part of its students' courses of study by means of distance education, the school needs to notify the Board of Studies nine (9) months prior to implementing distance education.
